10 november 2005 VCP announced today in the Palácio Piratini, the seat of Rio Grande do Sul state government, in the city of Porto Alegre, the beginning of the social and environmental process for the implementation of a pulp production unit in the south of the state.

There is apparently a lot going on in Rio Grande do Sul. Swedish-Finnish Company Stora Enso announced one month ago that the company had purchased land for wood production in the state and in the neighboring country Uruguay. Stora Enso is also planning to establish a pulp production unit in Rio Grande do Sul, ,,Aracruz Celulose, is also plannng for an establishment of a new huge pulpmill in Rio Grande do Sul. Aracruz is already producing 400 000 ton pulp per year outside Porto Alegre. ,Aracruz is also a partner with Stora Ensos in the recently established pulpmill Veracel in northeastern Brasil.,,One can forsee there might be a hardened competiton for the coming years concerning wood for pulp production in this part of the world. ,,
